조수미·용재 오닐·김지연·최태성 등 참여…토크콘서트도
나우프로덕션필름은 121년 된 하와이 한인 이주사를 배경으로 제작한 음악영화‘하와이 연가’가 제천국제음악영화제에 초청돼 지난 6일과 8일에 시사회(GV)를 개최했다.
재미동포 이진영 감독은 아름다운 하와이 풍광과 이민 선조들의 발자취를 현지촬영으로 카메라에 담았다.
여기에 성악가 조수미의 노래와 그래미상 수상 비올리스트 리처드 용재 오닐, 줄리아드 콩쿠르 우승의 바이올리니스트 김지연, 하와이의 전설적인 기타리스트 케올라 비머 등의 연주가 담겼고, 베테랑 배우 예수정이 사진 신부 '임옥순'의 목소리 연기를 더했다.
첫날 6일 시사회에는 한국사 작가로 영화 감수와 역사 자문을한 최태성 강사, 이진영 감독, 각본에 참여한 한인 후손 게리 박작가가 참여해 토크콘서트를 열었다.
하와이 연가는 지난 해 10월 제43회 하와이국제영화제에 공식 초청돼 월드 프리미어로 상영됐다. 이후 캘리포니아 UC 얼바인 대학을 비롯한 학교와 워싱턴 미주 한인위원회, 로스앤젤레스 한미연합회 등의 행사에서 상영됐다.
미 공영방송 PBS를 통해 방영 예정이며 국내에서는 오는 10월 전국 극장에서 개봉한다.
이 감독은“1903년 1월 13일 102명의 한국인이 하와이 호놀룰 루에 도착한 것이 하와이 한인사의 시작”이라며“이들 이민자가왜 고국을 등지고 먼 이국땅에 정착했고 뿌리를 내려 오늘날 훌륭한 사회 구성원으로 자리하게 됐는지를 연주와 함께 들려주는 영화”라고 소개했다.
한편, 이 감독은 지난 2021년 미주 한인 이민사를 다룬‘무지개 나라의 유산’으로 리버티국제영화제, 타고르국제영화제에서 최우수 신인 감독상을 수상했고,‘ 제41회 하와이국제영화제’를 비롯해전 세계 10여 개 영화제에 초청받아‘118년 하와이 한인 이민 역사를 따뜻하고 감성적인 시각으로 다룬 수작’이라는 평을 받았다.

Now Production Film’s musical film “Songs of Love from Hawaii,” based on the 121-year history of Korean immigration to Hawaii, was invited to the Jecheon International Music and Film Festival and held its preview on Sept. 6 and 8.
Director Lee Jin-young, a Korean American, captured the beautiful Hawaiian landscape and the footsteps of his immigrant ancestors through local filming.
The film features songs by vocalist Jo Sumi and performances by Grammy Award-winning violinist Richard Yong-jae O’Neill, Julliard Competition-winning violinist Kim Ji-yeon, legendary Hawaiian guitarist Keola Beamer and veteran actress Ye Soo-jung voices the picture bride Lim Ok-soon.
The first preview on Sept. 6 featured a forum with Choi Tae-sung, a Korean history writer who served as the film’s historical adviser;
director Lee; and Gary Park, a Korean descendant who contributed to the screenplay.
“Songs of Love from Hawaii” was officially invited to the 43rd Hawaii International Film Festival last October, where it made its world premiere. Since then, it has been screened at schools, including UC Irvine, and at events, such as the Council of Korean Americans in Washington and the Korean American Federation in Los Angeles.
The film will air on the U.S. Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) and will be released in theaters nationwide in Korea this coming October.
“The arrival of 102 Koreans in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Jan. 13, 1903, marked the beginning of the history of Koreans in Hawaii,” Lee said.
“Through music, this film tells the story of why these immigrants left their homeland and settled in a faraway land, and how they put down roots to become great members of society today.”
Meanwhile, Lee won the Best New Director award at the Liberty International Film Festival and Tagore International Film Festival in 2021 for “Legacy of the Rainbow Nation,” a film about Korean immigration to the United States, and was invited to more than 10 film festivals around the world, including the 41st Hawaii International Film Festival, where the film was praised as a “warm and emotional look at the 118-year history of Korean immigration to Hawaii.”
