53개국서 504명 출품…전년대비 응모자 81%(225명), 응모작도 84%(597편) 증가

재외동포청이 전 세계 재외동포를 대상으로 ‘2024년 재외동포 문학상’을 공모한 결과 전년대비 응모자가 81%(225명) 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 또 응모작도 84%(597편) 늘어났다. 총 53개국에서 504명, 1,304편이 출품됐다. 예년에 비해 올해 예산이 삭감되어 시상 인원이 대폭 감축되었음에도 불구하고, 접수자 및 접수작품이 작년에 비해 80% 넘게 증가했다

올해 26회째를 맞는 이 문학상은 한글문학 창작활동 장려를 통해 한인으로서의 정체성을 함양하고, 한민족으로서의 유대감 및 상호 이해를 제고하기 위해 1999년부터 매년 시행하고 있다. 올해 공모는 시, 단편소설, 수필·수기 등 3부문으로 진행했다.

9월 말 심사결과 발표

각 부문에서 대상(상금 500만원)과 우수상(상금 250만원), 가작(상금 100만원)을 시상하여 수상자는 9월 말 재외동포청(oka.go.kr)·코리안넷(korean.net)·소통24(sotong.go.kr) 누리집(홈페이지)을 통해 발표할 예정이다. 수상작은 작품집 ‘2024 재외동포 문학의 창’에 수록해 배포할 예정이다. 심사위원은 소설가 구효서·박상우·이경자, 시인 문태준이다.

한편, 재외동포청은 2024년 ‘제26회 재외동포 문학상’ 수상후보작에 대해 ‘행정기관의 공모전 운영에 관한 규정’에 따라 공개 검증을 실시했다.

검증대상은 ‘제26회 재외동포 문학상’ 수상후보작 총 13편이다. 수상후보작은 ▲시 부문 ‘그집’, ‘모시’, ‘나의 마을이 불타고 있다’, ‘미역 뿌리’▲단편소설 부문 ‘고 웨스트’, ‘말복 씨의 여름’, ‘낙원에 있으리라’, ‘팔마 데 마요르카(Palma de Mallorca)’▲수필·수기 부문 ‘나의 버킷 리스트 제1호’, ‘별은 나를 꿈꾸게 하고’, ‘가까운 천국’, ‘중동에서 다섯 번째 전쟁을’, ‘이웃집 여자 린다’.

 “재외동포의 문학작품은 ‘또 다른 나’를 뜨겁게 만나는 일”

재외동포 문학상 심사위원을 맡게 된 소감은?

“외국의 어느 길거리에서 우연히 한국어를 듣게 되었을 때의 말할 수 없는 감정, 그것은 기쁘다 좋다를 넘어 본능적이라고 할 만큼 즉각적인 ‘울컥함’이다. 재외동포의 문학작품을 읽는다는 것은 이역만리 타국에 존재하는 그러한 ‘또 다른 나’를 뜨겁게 만나는 일이며, 우리가 한국인으로서 공유하는 ‘언어’ 문제에 대해 ‘재외동포 문학상’은 한국작가로서 그것을 탐구할 매우 실질적인 기회가 될 거라고 기대했다. 다른 면에서는 재외동포의 작품은 특파원 보고와도 같아서 그들의 작품은 끝없이 내국인 작가의 ‘인식의 바깥’를 자극하고 확대하여 세계를 보는 안목과 시야를 깊고 넓게 할 수 있다고 믿었다.”

여타 신춘문예, 문학 공모전들과 재외동포 문학상이 구별되는 특별한 점이 있는지?

“한국문학이나 세계문학이 그런 것처럼, 신춘문예 등의 문학 공모전과 재외동포 문학상 모두 그 어떤 제한이나 제약 없이 형식이나 내용면에서 자유롭게 쓰인 언어적 결과물이다. 다만 한국문학은 한국어로 창작된 작품에 한정한 것이듯이 재외동포 문학상은 해외에 거주하면서 한국어로 쓴 작품을 대상으로 하기 때문에 그 특징이 더욱 도드라진다. 여전히 내용과 형식을 자유롭고 활달하게 다룬다 하더라도 거기에는 한국, 한국인, 한글이라는 요소가 작품의 배면에 숙명인 양 드리워지는 특징이 있다.”

 “유쾌한 문학, 나누는 문학 향해 재능을 마음껏 펼치길”

‘재외동포 문학상’에 참여하는 여러 작가들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면?

“문학은 활용하기에 따라 인생을 개량하는 훌륭한 도구가 된다. 책 많이 팔리는 유명작가가 되어야겠다는 욕망에만 시달리면 문학이 고통스런 자기 고문의 도구가 될 가능성이 크다. 세상의 모든 문학이 인간과 인생의 문제를 주제로 삼는다는 점을 이해하고 그것의 내적 가치에 눈을 돌리면 그것을 이용해 자기 인생을 풍요롭게 하고 타인과의 소통에 더할 나위 없이 좋은 도구로 문학을 활용할 수 있다. 문학에는 국경이 없으니 즐거운 문학, 유익한 문학, 유쾌한 문학, 그리고 나누는 문학을 향해 자기 재능을 마음껏 펼칠 수 있기를 바란다.”

올해 ‘재외동포 문학상’이 다른 점이 있다면?

“재외동포청으로 승격된 이후, 운영 시스템과 실무적 접근 방식, 대외 홍보와 심사위원진 편성 등등에 많은 변화가 나타나고 있는 것 같다. K컬처가 세계로 퍼져나가는 즈음에 재외동포문학상 운영 기금이 대폭 삭감되어 위축된 경영을 하는 듯하여 매우 안타까운 마음이 드는데, 재외동포의 입장에서 생각한다면 K문화를 해외에 적극 홍보하는 것보다 자국 동포에 대한 배려가 훨씬 우선되어야 할 문제라고 생각한다. 그럼에도 문학상 운영진이 대외 홍보 시스템을 체계화하여 올해 응모작이 작년에 비해 84%나 증가하였다는 사실을 접하고 놀라지 않을 수 없었다. 이런 분야에 대한 국가적 지원을 늘려 재외동포들이 K컬처의 그림자로 살지 않고 전 세계 어느 곳에서나 코리안이라는 자부심을 가지고 살게 되기를 간절히 빌고 싶다.“

 “그 삶의 현장에서 모국어로 문학작품 쓴다는 건 ‘아주 특별한 것’”

오랜 기간 ‘재외동포 문학상’ 심사를 맡아 오셨는데, 재외동포 문학상 공모전이 어떤 방향으로 추진되어야 할지 말씀해 주신다면?

“일회성 행사로 지나가는 것이 아니라 문학이란, 문자라는 도구로 표현되고 문자가 사라지지 않는 한 영원히 남는 것입니다. 언제 어느 때던, 그립고 필요할 때 꺼내서 볼 수 있되 사진처럼 낡지 않는 특별함도 있습니다. 문자로 형상화되는 예술의 위대함입니다.”

다른 문학상과 재외동포 문학상이 구별되는 점이 있다면?

“수필과 생활 수기의 경우 ‘재외동포’ 특수한 삶의 현실이 반영되는, 소재의 특수성이 있습니다. 그 삶의 현장에서 모국어로 사유하고 모국어로 문학성을 가진 글을 쓴다는 건 ‘아주 특별한 것’입니다.”

재외동포 문학상에 바라는 점이 있다면?

“재외동포 문학이란, 나고 자란 나라로부터 떠나 다른 곳에서 다른 언어로 말하고 다른 풍속에 스며드는 삶을 살아가는 사람들의 특수성이 잘 드러나야 할 것입니다. 그것에 더해 빼어난 문학성으로 다른 민족이나 다른 언어로 생활하는 사람들에게 감동을 준다면 충분히, 훌륭하다고 할 수 있습니다. 재외동포청에서 하는 재외동포를 위한 모국어의 축제에 성원을 아까지 말아야 할 이유는 너무도 많습니다. 그래서 ‘재외동포 문학상’은 더 큰 대접을 받아야 마땅한 국가적 사업입니다.”

 “재외동포 문학상을 구심점으로 연대와 결속의 축제가 되었으면”

올해 제1회 ‘무산문화대상’ 문학 부문의 첫 수상자가 되셨는데, 소감은?

“올해로 등단 30년을 맞았는데, 앞으로 시 쓰는 일에 게으르지 않고, 다른 데에 눈을 두지 말고 제 시세계의 영역을 넓히고 깊이를 더하라는 격려와 당부의 말씀이 담겨 있다고 생각합니다. 한국시의 갱신에 미력이나마 보태고자 애쓸 생각입니다.”

작품활동을 하면서 여러 나라 시인들의 시를 접해 보셨을 텐데, 나라마다의 특징이 있는지, 재외동포 문학은 어떤 특징이 있는지?

“물론 나라마다의 지역적 풍토와 풍습 등이 작품에 드러나기도 하지만 그것보다 뚜렷해진 전반적인 특징이 있는 것 같습니다. 예전에 응모한 작품들이 다소는 모국에 대한 그리움과 과거의 기억에 바탕을 해서 창작을 한 경우가 많았는데, 이제는 그런 성향에서 점차 벗어나 현 거주지에서의 일상과 시적 체험을 적극적으로 독창적으로 표현한 작품들이 많아진 것으로 보입니다. 창작에 대한 열의와 작품의 수준도 매우 높습니다. 만약에, 문학상 응모작들을 그 나라 언어로 다시 번역해 그 나라 시단에 내놓는다면 그 나라 독자들로부터 큰 호응을 받을 수 있을 것이라고 생각합니다.”

재외동포 문학상에 바라는 점이 있다면?

“더 많은 전 세계 재외 동포들의 호응이 계속 이어져서 이 문학상을 구심점으로 해서 연대와 결속의 축제가 되었으면 하는 바람입니다.”

504 writers from 53 countries: 81 pct (225) more applicants and 84 pct (597) more entries than last year

The Overseas Koreans Agency has announced the 2024 Overseas Koreans Literary Awards, which are open to overseas Koreans around the world, with an 81 percent (225) increase in the number of applicants and an 84 percent (597) increase in the number of entries compared with the previous year. A total of 1,304 entries were submitted by 504 writers from 53 countries. The number of entries and submissions increased by over 80 percent on-year, despite the fact that the number of awards was significantly reduced this year due to budget cuts.

Now in its 26th year, the literary awards have been held annually since 1999 to foster the Korean identity and enhance bonding and mutual understanding as one people by encouraging creative activities in Korean literature. This year’s contest was held in the three categories of Poetry, Short Story and Essay/Memoir.

Results announced in late September

The winners of the Grand Prize (5 million won), Honorable Mention Prize (2.5 million won) and Runner Up Prize (1 million won) in each category will be announced at the end of September on the websites of the OKA (oka.go.kr), Korean Net (korean.net) and Sotong24 (sotong.go.kr). The winning works will be included and distributed in the anthology 2024 Window to Overseas Korean Literature. The judges are novelists Gu Hyo-seo, Park Sang-woo, Lee Kyung-ja, and poet Mun Tae-joon.

The OKA conducted a public verification of the nominees for the 2024 26th Overseas Koreans Literary Award in accordance with the Regulations on the Operation of Competitions by Administrative Organizations.

A total of 13 works nominated for the 26th Overseas Koreans Literary Awards were subject to the verification. The nominees were Γψ “The House,” “Moshi,” “My Village Is Burning” and “Seaweed Root” in the Poetry category; Γψ “Go West,” “Malbok’s Summer,” “I Will Be in Paradise” and “Palma de Mallorca” in the Short Story category; and Γψ “My Bucket List No. 1,” “The Stars Make Me Dream,” “A Nearby Heaven,” “Fifth War in the Middle East” and “Linda, the Woman Next Door” in the Essay/Memoir category.

  ‘Literature by overseas Koreans is passionate encounter with another me’

How did you feel about being a judge for the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards?

“The indescribable feeling when you hear Korean on the street in a foreign country, it’s an instantaneous surge of feeling that goes beyond happiness and is just instinctive. Reading the literary works of overseas Koreans is an intense encounter with the ‘other me’ that exists in another country, and I expected that the ‘Overseas Koreans Literary Awards’ would be a very practical opportunity for me as a Korean writer to explore the issue of ‘language’ that we share as Koreans. On the other hand, I believed that the works of overseas Koreans are like foreign correspondent reports, and their works can endlessly stimulate and enlarge the outskirts of perception of a Korean writer, deepening and broadening our perspective and view of the world.”

Is there anything special that distinguishes the Overseas Koreans Literature Awards from other literary competitions?

“Just like Korean literature and world literature, both the Annual Spring Literary Contests and the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards are linguistic products that are written freely in terms of form and content without any restrictions or limitations. However, while Korean literature is limited to works written in Korean, the Overseas Koreans Literary Award is more distinctive because it targets works written in Korean while living abroad. Even though they are still free to play with content and form, they are characterized by the fact that Korea, Koreans and Hangeul loom in the background of the works as if by fate.”

 ‘May you unfold your talents toward a literature that is joyful, a literature for sharing’

What would you like to say to the writers participating in the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards?

“Literature is a great tool to improve your life, depending on how you use it. If you are only driven by the desire to become a famous author who sells a lot of books, it is very likely that literature will become a tool of painful self-torture. If you understand that all literature in the world is about human beings and their lives and you see its intrinsic value, it is an incomparable tool for enriching your life and communicating with others. Literature knows no borders, so I encourage you to use your talents to create literature that is enjoyable, informative, entertaining and for sharing.”

What’s different about this year’s Overseas Koreans Literary Awards?

“Since being elevated to work at the OKA, there have been many changes in the management system, practical approach, public relations and judging panel organization. I feel very sad that the funding for the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards has been drastically cut, and it is operating at a limited scale at a time when K-culture is spreading around the world, and from the perspective of overseas Koreans, I think that consideration for their own compatriots should be a much higher priority than actively promoting K-culture overseas. Nevertheless, I was surprised to learn that the management of the Literary Awards has systematized its public relations system, and that this year’s entries increased by 84 percent compared with last year. I sincerely hope that by increasing governmental support in this area, overseas Koreans will not live as shadows of K-culture but will be able to live with pride as Koreans anywhere in the world.”

 ‘It is something very special to write a literary work in your native language from the place you are living’

You’ve been a judge for the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards for many years. What do you think should happen with regards to the direction of the competition?

“Rather than being a one-time event, literature is something that is expressed through the tool of the written word and remains forever as long as the written word exists. There is something very special about it, something that you can take out and look at whenever you want and need it, but it does not get old like a photograph. That’s the greatness of art expressed through letters.”

What distinguishes the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards from other literary prizes?

“In the case of essays and life memoirs, there is a specificity to the subject matter, which reflects the reality of the particular life of an overseas Korean. To reason and write in one’s native language with literary quality from the scene of that life is something very special.” What are your hopes for the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards?

“Overseas Korean literature should reflect the particularities of people who have left the country of their birth and upbringing and are living elsewhere, speaking a different language and imbued with different customs.

“If it is also outstanding in its literary quality and touches the lives of people of other ethnicities or languages, then it is truly commendable. There are so many reasons to applaud the OKA’s celebration of the mother tongue for overseas Koreans. Therefore, the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards are a national undertaking that deserve even greater recognition.”

  ‘I hope Overseas Koreans Literary Awards can become a festival of solidarity and unity’

This year, you became the first winner of the inaugural Musan Cultural Award in the literary category. How do you feel?

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of my debut publication, and I think the award is an encouragement and a call to me to not be lazy in writing poetry, not to set my eyes elsewhere, and to broaden and deepen the scope of my poetry world. I will try my best to contribute even a little to the renewal of Korean poetry.” In your work, you’ve been exposed to poetry by poets from many different countries.

Do you think there are characteristics of each country, and what are the characteristics of overseas Korean literature?

“Of course, each country’s local customs and local flavors are reflected in the works, but I think there is an overall characteristic that is even clearer than this. In the past, submissions were often based on nostalgia for the homeland and memories of the past, but now there are many works that have gradually moved away from that tendency and are actively expressing their daily life and poetic experiences in their current place of residence. The enthusiasm for creating and the quality of the works are also very high. If we were to translate these submissions back into the language of their country of residence and publish them in that country’s poetry magazine, I think they would be very well received by readers of that country.”

What are your hopes for the Overseas Koreans Literary Awards?

“I hope that more and more overseas compatriots around the world will continue to respond, and that the literary prize will become a celebration of solidarity and unity.”
