한인 1.5세인 줄리 석(한국명 석지혜·49) 미국 포담대 법대 교수가 3월 ‘여성의 달’을 맞아 뉴욕주가 선정한 ‘여성 평등 챔피언’에 이름을 올렸다.

현지 동포사회 등에 따르면, 뉴욕주는 올버니 시에 위치한 뉴욕주청사 거버너스 리셉션 룸에서 3월 1∼29일 ‘평등의 챔피언들: 뉴욕 여성들과 평등권 수정안’ 전시회를 열었다. 전시회는 여성 평등권을 위해 투쟁해 온 여성 7명을 선정해 이들의 발자취를 소개하고 있으며, 한인으로서는 석 교수가 유일하게 포함됐다.

석 교수 이외에도 미국 ‘진보의 아이콘’ 으로 불렸던 루스 베이더 긴즈버그 전 연방 대법관(1933∼2020), 미국 의회 최초의 흑인 여성 하원의원을 지낸 셜리 치점(1924∼2005) 등이 선정됐다.

뉴욕주는 석 교수에 대해 “평등권 수정안(ERA) 및 비준 운동에 관한 책 ‘위 더 우먼’을 (2020년에) 썼다”며 “법학과 역사학, 사회학, 정치학 등 학문의 경계를 아우르는 헌법 제정자로서의 여성에 초점을 맞추는 비교법학자”라고 소개했다.

석 교수는 4살 때 미국으로 이민해 뉴욕 퀸스에서 자랐다. 미국 하버드대에서 영문학과 불문학을 전공했고, 예일대 로스쿨을 졸업했다. 영국 옥스퍼드대에서는 정치학 박사 학위를 받았다. 하버드대와 예일대 등에서 객원교수를 지냈고, 뉴욕시립대 교수를 거쳐 포담대에서 근무하고 있다.

그는 2006년 한국계 최초로 하버드 로스쿨 교수에 임용되고, 2010년에는 아시아계 여성 최초로 하버드 로스쿨 종신교수로 임명된 석지영(51) 교수의 동생이다.

Julie Suk (Korean name: Suk Ji-hye, 49), a 1.5-generation Korean American, has been recognized by New York as a Champion of Women’s Equality in honor of Women’s Month in March. According to the local Korean American community, the state of New York will host a “Champions of Equality: New York Women and the Equal Rights Amendment” exhibit from March 1-29 in the Governor’s Reception Room of the New York State Capitol in Albany. The exhibit highlights seven women who have fought for equal rights for women, and Dr. Suk is the only Korean American included.

Aside from Suk, other people selected include former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020), who is called an American “icon of progress,” and Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005), the first black woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“She is the author (in 2020) of ‘We the Women,’ a book about the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the campaign for its ratification,” the New York state government said of Suk, “a comparative jurist whose work focuses on women as constitutional framers across disciplines, including law, history, sociology and political science.”

Dr. Suk immigrated to the United States at the age of 4 and grew up in Queens, New York. She graduated from Harvard University, where she majored in English literature and creative writing, and Yale Law School. She earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Oxford, England. She has been a visiting professor at Harvard and Yale Universities, and a professor at the City University of New York before joining the Fordham University School of Law.

She is the younger sister of professor Suk Ji-young, 51, who was the first Korean American to join the Harvard Law School faculty in 2006 and the first Asian American woman to receive tenure at Harvard Law School in 2010.
