미국 조지아주 브룩헤이븐시 시장 선거 결선 투표에서 한국계 미국인 존 박(49·한국명 박현종) 전 브룩헤이븐시 시의원이 당선됐다. 박 전 시의원은 지난해 12월 5일(현지시간) 실시된 결선 투표에서 58.6%(3천564표)를 득표해 41.4%(2천520표)를 얻은 로렌 키퍼 후보에 승리했다.

이로써 박 당선인은 조지아주의 첫 아시아계 시장이면서 한국계 첫 시장이라는 기록을 세웠다. 박 당선인은 지난해 11월 진행된 1차 투표에서도 키퍼 후보를 따돌리고 43%를 득표해 1위를 차지했지만, 득표율이 과반에 미달해 결선 투표를 치르게 됐다.

박 당선인은 1970년대에 가족과 함께 미국에 이민했다. 그는 애틀랜타에 있는 에모리대에서 경영학을 전공한 뒤 IBM에서 기술 컨설팅 업무를 했다. 이후 미국 방산 기업 노스럽그루먼에서 미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)와의 계약 업무를 담당했고, 국가적 질병을 감시하는 기술 컨설턴트로도 일했다.

그는 2014년 보궐 선거로 처음 시의원에 당선됐고 9년간 애틀랜타의 에모리대에서 세 번 시의원을 지냈다. 그는 시장 출마를 위해 지난해 8월 시의원직을 사임했고, 1월 중 시장에 공식 취임한다.

2017년 6월 ‘평화의 소녀상’ 건립 주도

   박 당선인은 2017년 6월에는 브룩헤이븐시 공원 내 애틀랜타 평화의 소녀상이 세워지는 데 주도적인 역할을 했다. 이 소녀상은 원래 애틀랜타 중심지인 전국민권센터에 건립될 예정이었으나, 애틀랜타 주재 일본 총영사관의 집요한 방해로 건립이 좌절됐다. 결국, 박 의원이 소녀상을 건립할 대체 장소로 브룩헤이븐시 공원을 제시하고, 존 언스트 당시 시장과 시의회가 동의해 건립이 성사됐다.

  박 당선인은 유창한 한국어로 “너무 기뻐서 말을 못 하겠다”고 당선 소감을 밝혔다. 그는 이어 영어로 “이민 1세대로서 조지아주 최초의 아시아계, 한국계 시장이 된 것을 자랑스럽게 생각한다”며 “동네 고등학교에서 농구를 즐기던 ‘이상한 아시아계 소년’이 나중에 시장이 되리라고 상상도 못 했다”고 말했다.

  그는 “9년 전 처음 시의원으로 정치를 시작했을 때 수많은 서류를 보고 뭘 해야 할지 몰랐다”며 “하지만 모두가 함께 좋은 일을 하자는 정신으로 일했고, 여러분과 함께 오늘 승리할 수 있었다”고 회고했다. 그러면서 “브룩헤이븐 시를 지속 가능한 녹색도시로 만들겠다”고 밝혔다.

  애틀랜타 한인사회는 박 당선인의 출마 직후부터 후원금을 모금하는 한편 선거 참여를 독려해왔다. 김백규 애틀랜타 평화의 소녀상 건립위원장은 “존 박 후보의 시장 당선을 시작으로 앞으로 한인들이 미국 정부 공직에 도전해 좋은 결과를 얻기 바란다”고 말했다.

Former Brookhaven Councilman John Park (Korean name Park Hyun-jong), a Korean American, has been elected the mayor of Brookhaven, Georgia, U.S., in a runoff election. In the runoff election held Dec. 5, Park received 58.6 percent of the vote (3,564 votes), defeating Lauren Kiefer, who received 41.4 percent (2,520 votes).

Park, 49, made history as the first Asian American and first Korean American mayor in Georgia. Park beat Kiefer in the first round of voting in November last year, taking 43 percent of the vote, but fell short of a majority, triggering a runoff.

Park immigrated to the United States with his family in the 1970s.

He studied business administration at Emory University in Atlanta and worked in technology consulting at IBM. He later worked for the U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman on contracts with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and as a technology consultant for national disease surveillance.

He was first elected to the council in a by-election in 2014 and served three terms over nine years at Atlanta’s Emory University. He resigned from the council in August last year to run for mayor and will be officially sworn in as mayor in January.

Spearheaded the unveiling of Young Girl’s Statue for Peace in June 2017

   In June 2017, Park played a leading role in the unveiling of the Atlanta Young Girl’s Statue for Peace in Brookhaven City Park. The statue was originally scheduled to be placed at the National Civil Rights Center in the heart of Atlanta but was blocked by the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta. Eventually, Park suggested Brookhaven City Park as an alternative site for the statue, which was agreed to by then Mayor John Ernst and the City Council.

  “I’m so happy, I’m speechless,” Park said in fluent Korean.

  Continuing in English, he said: “As a first-generation immigrant, I am proud to be Georgia’s first Asian and Korean American mayor. I never imagined that the ‘weird Asian boy’ who played basketball at my local high school would one day become mayor.”

  “When I first started in the City Council nine years ago, I was overwhelmed by all the paperwork and didn’t know what to do, but we all worked together in the spirit of doing good, and together with you, we won today. We will make Brookhaven a sustainable, green city,” he said.

  The Korean American community in Atlanta has been raising money and encouraging participation in the election since shortly after Park’s announcement.

  “We hope that John Park’s victory as mayor will inspire other Koreans to run for public office in the United States,” said Kim Baek-gyu, chair of the Atlanta Young Girl’s Statue for Peace Committee.
