이 책은 광활한 유라시아 대륙에 흩어져 살고 있는 50만 고려인의 150년 역사를 개괄한 통사(通史)다. 한국의 역사학계는 지금까지 ‘카레이스키 통사’, 즉 유라시아 고려인 통사를 내놓은 적이 없다. 사학자가 아닌 서울신문과 문화일보 편집국장을 지낸 언론인이 그 통사에 도전했다. 필자는 이 책의 집필을 위해 지난 10년간 러시아와 중앙아시아 각국에 대한 10여 차례의 현지답사, 관계자 면담, 문헌연구 등에 많은 땀을 흘렸다.
이 책은 고려인들의 1860년대 연해주 이주부터 시작해 오늘날 ‘역사적 조국’ 한국과의 만남에 이르기까지 잊힌 역사의 진실을 개괄적으로 복원한 것이다. 고려인 사회의 그러한 축적을 바탕에 두고 한국 사학계의 연구 실적과 저자의 개인적인 연구결과 등을 종합하여 고려인 150년사에 관해 총체적으로 정리했다.

This book is a complete overview of the 150-year history of the half-million Koryo people scattered across the vast continent of Eurasia. Until now, Korean historians have never produced a “Kareisky history,” or a history of the Eurasian Koryo people. Rather than a historian, a journalist who served as editor-in-chief of the Seoul Shinmun and the Munhwa Ilbo was the first to take on the challenge of writing a complete history. In order to write this book, the journalist spent the last 10 years making around 10 research trips to Russia and Central Asia, interviewing officials and researching literature.

This book is an overview of the forgotten truths of history, starting with the migration of the Koryo people to Primorsky Krai in the 1860s and ending with their encounter with the “historical homeland” of Korea today. Based on the accumulated knowledge of Koryo society, this book synthesizes the research results of Korean historians and the author’s personal research to provide a comprehensive overview of the 150-year history of the Koryo people.
